1. Google Signals

  • Location: Admin > Setup Assistant
  • Action: Turn on Google Signals
  • Status: On
  • Description: Google Signals tracks cross-device tracking, remarketing with GA, demographics and interests, and ad reporting features.

2. Unwanted Referrals (optional)

  • Location: Admin > Data Stream > Configure Tag Settings
  • Action: List unwanted referrals
  • Status: Depends on the client’s needs
  • Description: Use this option if you need to exclude referrals, such as third-party payment processors or any other unwanted sources.

3. Enhanced Measurement

  • Location: Admin > Data Streams
  • Action: Enable event options without updating any code
  • Status: On
  • Description: Enhanced Measurement allows you to track various events without requiring any code changes. These events include page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video views, file downloads, and form submissions.

4. Granular Location and Device Data Collection

  • Location: Admin > Data Settings > Data Collection
  • Action: On (must add Google Signals and acknowledge notice)
  • Status: On
  • Description: Enabling this feature ensures collection of detailed location and device data. Note that disabling this feature will result in the loss of specific data, including city, latitude, longitude, browser minor version, browser User-Agent string, device brand, device model, device name, operating system minor version, platform minor version, and screen resolution.

5. Event Data Retention

  • Location: Admin > Data Settings > Data Retention
  • Action: Set to 14 months
  • Status: You can choose between 2 months and 14 months.
  • Description: Adjust the data retention period to 14 months to retain more historical data from your site users. The default option is 2 months.

6. Reset User Data on New Activity

  • Location: Admin > Data Settings > Data Retention
  • Action: On
  • Status: On
  • Description: This feature allows the 14-month data retention period to reset when a user returns to the site, enabling the storage of more data.

7. Reporting Identity

  • Location: Admin > Reporting Identity
  • Action: Select “Blended”
  • Status: Blended
  • Description: Choose the “Blended” reporting identity option to enable GA to use four identity spaces: userid, Google Signals, device id, and modeling. Note that modeling may take some time to appear for an account, and Google Signals will not function correctly if not set up correctly in the initial steps.

8. Reporting Attribution Model

  • Location: Admin > Attribution Settings
  • Action: Choose “Data Driven”
  • Status: Data Driven
  • Description: Data-driven attribution is the default model and is usually the best starting point. You can change this attribution model at any time, and it’s retroactive, meaning it will affect historical data in your reporting.

9. Lookback Window

  • Location: Admin > Attribution Settings
  • Action: Set to 30 days for Acquisition conversion events, 90 days for all other events
  • Status: 30 days for Acquisition conversion events, 90 days for all other events
  • Description: Adjust the lookback window to align more closely with Universal Analytics (UA). The default lookback window for UA was 6 months.

10. Linking

  • Location: Admin
  • Action: Link Google Search Console (GSC) and Google Ads as needed
  • Status: Depending on your requirements
  • Description: Linking GSC and Google Ads allows for better integration and more comprehensive data analysis within GA4.
